Welcome Back to School 2011 / 2012
Welcome Back to School………2011 / 2012
"We will SOAR like eagles!"
Welcome back parents, students, teachers, faculty and friends of WAYS. I want to thank all of you for your commitment to our wonderful school and for your efforts in making our school a great place for students to learn. It is because of our outstanding partnership, that WAYS has a second chance to relive our school's mission to empower students to be leaders, change agents, self-responsible learners and true scientists. In a day of declining enrollment, we are pleased to announce tremendous growth. In addition to the K school and Manchester sites, this school year we opened a second K-5 site located at S. Central. We expect our school population to exceed 500 students this year!
Wow, we accomplished a lot together last year! We jumpstarted the year with Heal the Bay and participated in the world's largest volunteer event, Coastal Cleanup Day. Our efforts to clean up our environment were honored in a documentary, Coastal Cleanup Day which aired last September on KTLA, Channel 5. We went on to open the WAYS Literacy and Fitness Park as well as assist our young scientists with learning adventures to Catalina Island, Arrowhead Ranch Science Camp and the Aquarium of the Pacific Overnight Stay. Most of all we accomplished a triumphant renewal of our charter with Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) as our authorizer.
Some of our goals this year include building our API score again. Tragically we did not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) last year. Our API dived to 734. I am believer that together we can renew our strength and rise to 800 and beyond again. With a highly qualified, experienced teaching staff, we are well prepared to restore our trend of success. With new teachers and new staff members on board we are certain to SOAR like eagles. Parents you can help with this effort by sending your child to school each day, in uniform and on-time.
Parents at WAYS are encouraged to participate in our educational programs. You may extend your support by attending monthly Family Nights, helping your child's teacher in the classroom, joining the Parent Council or becoming members of the School Site Council. Parents and community members are encouraged to contact the principal or school staff for opportunities to participate in the aforementioned programs.
As always, we thank you for your commitment, thank you for volunteering and we thank you for entrusting us with the education of your child. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
My best,

Alake Watson
Principal
